Foods That Heal

It seems the concept of foods that heal is becoming more and more popular with each passing day. I find it odd that so many people are unaware of the idea, as if it hasn’t been this way since the foundation of the world. While everyone knows what the basic purpose of food is - to satisfy hunger. People have simply not been aware that foods can also heal the body.

Whole and natural foods contain many nutrients and vitamins that our bodies can easily process and begin to heal the body without visiting a doctor. While it’s true that some of these foods are slightly more expensive than processed foods their benefits clearly outweigh the costs and in most cases they cost just a few pennies more than the cheaper alternatives.

As we have discovered, foods that heal are clearly better for you than the processed foods, which are void of the full nutrient spectrum that is available in whole and organic foods. The process that foods go through to be marketed actually strips many nutrients away, making them less beneficial to the body.

Let’s take a look at some foods that help heal the body naturally.

Garlic

Believe it or not garlic is considered to one of the best natural antibiotics available. Raw, uncooked garlic contains allicin which kills bacteria, fungi and helps fight viruses. Bacteria do not build up a resistance to garlic like they do many antibiotics which is just one reason that it is an effective natural health food. Additionally, the overuse of antibiotics to treat illness is alarming the medical community to search for alternatives. Garlic is a great place to start.

Kiwi

Unbelievably, this tropical fruit contains twice as much vitamin C as an orange, naturally thins the blood to help fight hypertension and has been shown to help improve conditions of asthma and macular degeneration. Kiwi is also high in fiber and helps reduce cholesterol which in turn lowers the risk of heart disease and heart attack. With all of these benefits it isn’t hard to see why kiwi wouldn’t be considered one of the foods that heal.

Bananas

If you commonly experience heartburn or indigestion then adding bananas to your diet may be a very attractive option for you. Bananas are high in antacids. This can help soothe heartburn and ease the stomach while fighting existing and forming stomach ulcers. The banana also lowers blood pressure and reduces your risk of stroke.

Watercress

Here is an interesting fact - ounce for ounce watercress has more calcium and vitamins than anything else on earth. It has more calcium than milk and more per capita vitamins than any fruit. One of the most effective uses of watercress is in salad. Another benefit of watercress is that it will help to treat cancer. It actually kills certain types of cancerous cells and has the potential to destroy many harmful carcinogens in your food as well.

Onions

One of the most effective ways to naturally fight esophageal, prostate and certain types of mouth cancer, onions actually help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Chances of osteoporosis in women are severely diminished as consuming onions can help increase bone density. Ongoing research also suggests that onions may help reduce inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis and allergic airway inflammation.
