Ten Top Products for Your Non Toxic Household

For those of you who are regular visitors to our site, you know the value we place on a non toxic household and on non toxic cleaning. You also know very well the dangers we find in our everyday household products and some of the best toxin free products to substitute them with.

There are many inexpensive, natural alternatives that can safely be used in place of commercial household products and to help you create a non toxic household. Since everyone loves a top 10 list, we put together an informative list of ten top toxin free products that can be used for a variety of household applications.

Vinegar

Vinegar is powerfully antibacterial. Just a 5 percent solution can kill 95-99% of bacteria and up to 80% of germs. Simply put some vinegar into a spray bottle and use it to disinfect in the kitchen and the bathroom. Vinegar is also a great toxin free product for clearing clogged drains. Just pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain, then slowly pour 1 cup of vinegar in after it. Let it sit for 15 minutes and flush with water.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is an indispensable product for your non toxic household. Great as a deodorizer, you can clean up carpets by sprinkling liberally with baking soda and vacuuming up after about an hour. You can also clear away unwanted scents in your refrigerator by placing an opened box in the door. It also serves as a nonabrasive cleanser for our kitchen counter tops, bathtubs, sinks and ovens.

Borax

Otherwise known as sodium borate, it cleans, deodorizes, disinfects, and softens water. Direct applications include cleaning wallpaper, painted walls, and floors. Borax is cheap and works great as dishwashing detergent. It can also be used by itself for washing clothes and removing stains.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is one of the more common toxin free products found in the home. Used as a disinfectant for most applications it can be used for such tasks as a vegetable wash to kill bacteria and neutralize chemicals from pesticides. Another common cleaning use for peroxide is to pour some in the back of your toilet to dissolve the mold that builds up.

Isopropyl Alcohol

Alcohol is a great way to clean glass throughout the home. It’s great for mirrors, pictures, and windows. Many types of laundry stains can also be treated with alcohol. Try it on grass and blood stains for your non toxic cleaning. Simply put, isopropyl alcohol is an absolute must for any healthy home.

Cornstarch

Made from corn, cornstarch usually comes as a fine, white powdery starch. Surprisingly cornstarch can be used to clean windows and even to shampoo carpets and rugs. It’s great for a variety of stain removal jobs, and can serve as a polish for your silver. I have personally used it to loosen a grease stain from my clothes, by applying it and letting it set overnight.

Natural Soaps

Look for unscented soaps that are made from fats and lye, and avoid those that contain petroleum. Natural soaps are safe to use, biodegradable, and clean almost anything. No non toxic household should be without natural soaps.

Citrus Oils

Citrus oils include lemon and lime juices, grapefruit juices, and orange juices. Since citrus is acidic it has strong cleaning properties. They are great for cutting grease in your dishes and can even be used in place of dangerous paint thinners in cleaning paint brushes. Additional uses include as an air freshener and as a germ killing disinfectant. Usually small drops combined with water are all you need for most applications.

Washing Soda

Washing Soda is simply a mineral that cuts grease, removes stains, softens water, and cleans linoleum and ceramic tiles on your sink, tub, or wall. It is simply a great non toxic household product. Be careful with washing soda, as it can irritate mucous membranes with repeated exposure. Do not use on aluminum, fiberglass, or on waxed floors.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is great as a non toxic cleaner or as a general household antiseptic spray. Simply spray the areas that need antiseptic attention, such as blood stains, or where your dog may have had an accident, or even to disinfect your countertop after preparing meals.

A non toxic household is within reach for anyone looking to achieve a healthier lifestyle. However, it should be noted that although these products we advocate are viable replacements for toxic products in the home, you should continue to make sure to keep all home-made formulas out of the reach of children.
