What is Skullcap?
Skullcap is a small perennial herb that grows primarily in North America and Southeast Asia. Its name refers to any of the several species of Scutellaria in the mint family Labiatae. Skullcap gets its name from its blue flowers, which have two “lips” and are like the skullcaps worn in medieval times. This herb has been used for hundreds of years to help ease muscle tension and spasms. It has also had a historical use of being used to treat symptoms of rabies.
Rich in minerals which help support a healthy nervous system, it helps to relieve stress and is commonly used today as an anti-inflammatory remedy for many diseases including Parkinson’s disease, rabies and epilepsy. This wonderful herb can also be found in many over the counter nerve tonics found at your local vitamin shops.

Skullcap has so many benefits that we are still discovering all of its many uses. Along with aiding in digestion, this herb has been used to treat many common illnesses.
- Muscle Spasms

Although skullcap has many uses to help treat common illnesses and diseases, it must be used with caution. Used sparingly and not in excess, it can help soothe the nervous system and over-excited muscles. When overused, skullcap can cause muscle aches and also raise the body temperature. Since skullcap has also been known to damage the liver when used in excess, it should not be taken unceremoniously.
